As you well know, the purpose of the JOURNAL OF MICROSURGERY is to present a forum for the reporting of ideas, theories, techniques, and results involving the use of magnification in surgery. The Journal came about because its editors and supporters believed in the principle that "seeing better leads to better done," and that the dissemination of knowledge is important to a developing technique.
Much already has been written in the scientific literature dealing with microsurgery. Part of this, some say too much, has been noted by the popular press and reported in the nonscientific media. Thus has the layperson learned of "the miracle of reimplantation," "an answer to stroke," "the reversal of sterility," "the restoration of hearing," " a gift of vision," and "hope for the spinal victim.
