, delegates and participants from five continents converged on the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School for a conference to honor the 80 th anniversary (the 81 st , to be precise) of Professor Phillip Valentine Tobias' birth and Dart's publication of the Taung child. Entitled "African Genesis: A Symposium on Hominid Evolution in Africa," the conference included 93 podium or poster presentations that covered most aspects of the human fossil record and Paleolithic archeology (Fig. 1). The large number of presentations and limitations in space preclude discussion of all of the interesting research presented, so an admittedly subjective list of highlights follows, with apologies to those neglected.
