The way forward

In the future we will start to see the emergence of 'trusted mobiles'. The development of trusted mobiles -a combination of mobile telephone, PDA and smart card -will enable users to run applications securely from anywhere in the world.

For this purpose the various manufacturers will start to market trusted mobiles that incorporate the security functionality that is necessary to do this on the client side, e.g. VPN or digital signature capability, strong authentication and so on.

This concept will ensure that the user benefits not only from maximum func-tionality within its communications services, but also from maximum flexibility, all in a highly reliable and secure environment. So, we can see that today, and even more so in the future, the smart card is the security module for the user.
