Abstract
Tightening accounting rules and even jailing executives who abuse them will not completely solve all the
problems of corporate governance and executive misbehavior we've witnessed over the past few years. The author
argues that investors and regulators would be better served by finding out why executives—and managers at all
levels—engage in such practices and suggests how to attack the disease itself, not just the symptoms.
