Wavelength conversion of the Yb 3þ -silica fibre laser operating near 1.09 lm has been demonstrated by acting as a direct pump source for a small scale Tm 3þ -silica fibre laser to provide an output at 1.9 lm. The characterisation of the Tm 3þ -silica fibre laser is described; it operated with a thr

We report on relative gain measurements at 1.92 lm in Tm:CaF 2 films grown on pure CaF 2 substrates by using Liquid Phase Epitaxy with CaCl 2 as a solvent. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements show that the Tm 3+ :CaF 2 films are about 5 lm thick and have a small lattice mismatch w
