En un futuro muy lejano, la ciencia y la tecnología se han perdido, dejando al mundo ante una humanidad agonizante, decadente y ante constantes luchas por el poder. La ambientación gótica, tenebrosa e inquietante, nos sitúa ante Titus, el joven heredero del castillo laberíntico de Gormenghast, que pasa a ser el verdadero protagonista de esta novela debido a sus recovecos, sus secretos y unos personajes tan grotescos como siniestros. Esta Bildungsroman (novela de formación y desarrollo del protagonista) nos ofrece a un Titus destinado a convertirse en el 77 Conde de Groan, haciendo frente a la locura de su padre y la aparición de un ejército de criados del castillo que conspiran por arrebatarle el poder.
