β¦ Synopsis
Distribution of humic acids (HA) in rats was studied using radioiodinated HA injected intraperitoneally. Distribution of 1251 was also studied for comparison. The distribution pattern of HA differed greatly from that of 1251. Except in the thyroid and skin, 1251 was excreted from the body within 24 hours, whereas a large proportion of HA remained in the liver, kidney, skin, thyroid, bone and muscle. The difference in the distribution pattern and organ/serum radioactivity ratio suggests different kinetics for 1251 and 1251-HA. The distribution pattern of HA Correlated very well with the increased prevalences of organ diseases in the blackfoot disease endemic area, as reflected:in epidemiologic studies. It is hypothesised that HA-metal complexes are possible etiological factors of diseases such as goitre, hepatoma, bladder cancer, vascular disease and diabetes mellitus, and that free radicals are the common causative factor.

The ultimate analyses, u.v.-visible absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and i.r. spectra of five humic acids have been studied. One was obtained commercially from peat, two from organic-rich soils, one from an estuary and one from a marine sediment. The U.V. spectra were used to compare average
It has been found that humic acids in aqueous solution, as previously found with their sodium salts, behave as linear polyelectrolytes. A possible explanation in terms of intermolecular associative forces is suggested.
Small-angle neutron scattering experiments have been made on solutions of humic acid aggregates with an acidity corresponding to pH 5.0 and at 0.1 M ionic strength. We observe power-law decay of the intensity over one decade of the scattering vector, Q, indicating that the aggregates are fractal. We
