Subpicosecond time-resolved transient grating experiments were performed in mercuric iodide, a wide bandgap semiconductor.

Hot carriers created by two-photon absorption cooled within a few picoseconds to form the free exciton. The free exciton lifetime was 1.8 k 0.2 ns. Coherent Raman excitation of the 1 I4 cm
