โœฆ Synopsis

The time-dependent solutions of the Bloch equations describing the response of a system with two rotationally degenerate manifolds {/HZ} and {J 'm') to coherent radiation close to resonance are considered. Two new phenomena are predicted. The possible applications to measuring relaxation rates in realistic systems are briefly discussed_ * Research sponsored by the Fmdamental Interactions Branch, Division of Chemical Sciences, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, US Department of Energy, under contract \V-7405eng-26. * Work begun while author was attending Albion College and participating in the Oak Ridge Science Semester program sponsored by the Great Lakes College Association and the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.

A master equation for population in a two-level system interacted with bosons in a timedependent electric field is derived in a noninteracting-blip approximation. For a \(\mathrm{cw}\) field the asymptotic solution of this equation is determined to all orders of the perturbation expansion with respe
