✦ Synopsis
The a.c. losses of normal conductors and superconductors are calculated when subjected to field changes with different ramp times during one cycle. They are compared with harmonic field changes corresponding to the individual ramps. The time constant for the transverse losses in flat superconducting cables, at which the losses are maximum, is also given. The results are applied to the proposed operation of the Large Helical Device (in Phase II of the project). The calculation scheme can be used for any external field change given by a Fourier series.
