✦ Synopsis
Adrenoehrom is well-known as a vasoaetive haemostyptic, frequently given in premature infants. 31 guinea pigs received an injection of adrenochrommonosemicarbazon, 5 ml per kilogram. 24 others were given l~aC1. Then hyaline membrane disease was induced by exposition to 12 vol.~ C02 for 5, 10, 15, 20, or 40 hrs. From the lungs of each animal 10 histological cross sections were made and evaluated microscopically (in Figs. 1--5 each dot represents the 10 sections of one animal). Adrenoehrom animals had higher relative lung weights than NaC1 controls; after 5 hrs they had more pulmonary vascular congestion and haemorrhage; their 5 to 40 hrs regression lines were steeper for atelectases, alveolar oedemas, and hyaline membranes (but only the difference of atelectasis regression lines was significant). If conclusions are permitted from these experiments with relatively high doses an aggravating effect of adrenochrom on hyaline membrane disease is conceivable. Thus, adrenochrom should not be given in premature infants until further investigations have been carried out.
