โฆ Synopsis
This patent describes brush seals designs that are intended to extend the range of applications that could be sealed using such seals. Typical high temperature alloy bristles are said to be limited to 365 m/s and 800ยฐC. Typically ceramic or polymeric fibres are very thin, 2-3 ฮผm diameter. Brush seals are described that include fibres fabricated from non-metallic ceramic or polymeric materials. The ceramic fibres extend the temperature range of the seals. In addition, brush seals made from softer high strength polymeric fibres, such as Nomex, with moderate temperature capability in the range 260-380ยฐC, may be used for high performance bearings such as counter-rotating bearing cavities of advanced gas turbine engines.
