โฆ Synopsis
The article shows that the conventional division of knowledge into two types, explicit and tacit knowledge, is no longer sufยฎcient. Information and communication technology has created a need and an opportunity to divide knowledge into three groups: (1) explicit and highly-structured knowledge; (2) explicit and less-structured knowledge (such as the discussions in the `communities' in the Internet); (3) tacit (non-explicit) knowledge. These knowledge types and related parallel knowledge processes have been identiยฎed empirically in case studies. The article helps managers to build and interconnect three kinds of business and knowledge processes that enable a ยฎrm's efยฎcient functioning and continuous renewal. The processes that are based on less-structured knowledge are especially important for companies because they help the ยฎrms to improve their creativity and to build their competencies.
