The three cases presented had such a diagnosis on prenatal sonographic examination. The diagnosis was confirmed after birth by radiographs, and immediate surgery was performed in order to prevent development of complications. All of the cases described were full-term newborns of low birth weight. The last case had multiple anomalies. Postoperatively the prognosis is poor in infants of a small birth weight and those with multiple an~malies.~ Congenital heart disease is frequently found in association with esophageal atresia and duodenal a t r e ~i a . ~, ~ Incidentally, two of our cases did have heart anomalies. The ultrasound examinations were performed utilizing a Diasonics real-time unit with a 3.5-MHz transducer.

CASE REPORTS

Case 1

A 38-year-old gravida 3, para 2, with class A diabetes mellitus was referred from the high-risk clinic for a prenatal sonographic examination. Marked polyhydramnios was noted. A 36-week fetus was seen. There were no fluid-filled structures within the fetal abdomen except the urinary bladder (Figure 1A). During the scanning, the fetal mouth demonstrated active swallowing ~~~
