RITINGS about nonprofit boards of directors tend to fall into four categories. These categories are created from a matrix W containing two dimensions: the normative versus empirical dimension and the board process versus governance decision dimension. Normatively oriented writings (by far the largest majority) describe how boards ought to operate. Empirical and analytical writings are more interested in describing research into how and why boards work the way they do, saying little about the normative implications of the findings.
