Tom was always prescient and "ahead of the curve" in rheumatologic thought, an example being the publication of his monograph entitled Untoward Reactions of Cortisone and ACTH, coauthored with Vincent J. Derbes and published in 1951, only shortly after glucocorticoids had arrived on the clinical scene. Rereading the monograph today reveals that it is still largely accurate and introduces the potential ill effects of glucocorticoids that we now all recognize.
