Biochemistry is organized nationally and internationally in three tiers. The first is the national biochemical society. This, quite naturally, is well known to the individual biochemist because he or she participates in its scientific meetings, publishes in its journals, becomes a member and perhaps serves on its committees and becomes an officer.
The next tier consists of the regional organizations. Many biochemists are not well informed concerning these organizations since they are one step removed from the national societies which make up their membership. There are three such organizations. The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) was organized in 1964 and includes in its membership biochemical societies from Austria,
