Previously we have shown that 1, 3-dimethyl 4-thiouracil l interacts photochemically with methacrylonitrile 2 yielding two products, namely 2 and the rather unexpected 2 (1). As the mechanistic study of this photoreaction could help understand 4-thiouridine photochemistry in E.coli tRNA (2-5). we have tried to characterise the intermediates involved in the reaction steps between the excited 4-thiouracil derivative and the isolated products 2 andQ.
