Abstract

Earlier measurements of the dependence of the domain width D on the crystal thickness T, in cobalt, are verified, and extended to values of T up to 0.4 ΞΌm. The validity of the relation D ∼ T^2/3^, which differs from existing theories as a result of the surface structure, is confirmed. A model is proposed for this surface structure of cobalt, which is based on observed colloid patterns. Application of a magnetic field gives rise to different types of remanent domain structures, including the so‐called honeycomb structure.
