## Abstract A brief discussion is given of the selection of the reference states for defining the relative activity of a desperse dye in the fibre phase and in the solution phase. Contrary to recent findings^2^), it is suggested that the application of the Flory‐uggins equations for polymer solutio

✦ Synopsis
After a general introduction into the thermodynamics of dyeing, the sorption problem of dispersed dyes by hydrophobic fibers is treated by use of relations developed on the basis of different absorption models. The effects of additives (salts, organic solvents and dispersing agents) are discussed.
