โœฆ Synopsis

FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS PERTAINING TO THE TOPIC.

(I) During the past few years, numerous investigators have studied the swelling pressure of coal. The published contributions of Mott and Wheeler, 12 Altieri, t Brown, 3 Davis and associates, 6 Foxwell, 7 Koppers, 1ยฐ and Russell t~ are outstanding; a considerable amount of unpublished experimental work has undoubtedly accumulated. For the past few years this problem has been under investigation at the School of Mineral Industries, The Pennsylvania State College, but as yet no results have been released. Although considerable experimental data are available, no analysis of fundamental concepts has yet been proposed.

The purpose of this discussion is to attempt a theoretical treatment referring to the pressure developed by a coal charge undergoing carbonization. In order to limit this treatment to its fundamental aspects, certain simplifying conditions have been introduced. Such factors as origin, secondary geological changes, differences in rank and type, and details of petrographic and chemical composition may be regarded, for the purpose of this analysis, as immaterial to the basic problem.

Excessive pressure generated during heating and swelling of coals in coke ovens is one of the major safety concerns for the coke and steel producers. Large pressures against coke oven walls can seriously damage the ovens and reduce their life span. In the work presented here, a laboratory scale meth

In this paper the solvent swelling technique is applied to coal residues obtained by catalytic hydrogenation, to monitor the changes produced in crosslinking density during the hydrogenation process. An attempt is made to correlate the volumetric swelling ratio with coal rank, temperature and reside
