Abstract
The sorption of Fe^3+^ and Cu^2+^ ions on a fibrous polyampholyte synthesized by modification of PAN fibres with EDA is studied by thermodynamic methods. The endothermic adsorption process and the positive change of the entropy of the system with the established effect of compensation between ฮ__H__ and ฮ__S__ are an indication for the complicated mechanism of the chemisorption with complex formation. The complexes formed with the both ions are different. The __p__H value of the metal salt solutions affect strongly on the adsorption process. At __p__H > 2 sorption of Cu^2+^ dominates, while at lower __p__H values sorption of Fe^3+^ prevails.

The lipophilicity and hydrogen bonding capability of the title compounds was investigated. HPLC lipophilicity indices proved to be appropriate substitutes of directly measured octanol-water partition coefยฎcients and were used to evaluate the predictive power of 7 different calculative approaches.
