Thirteen new metallic glasses based on near-eutectic alloys rich in U. Np or Pu have been prepared by two different liquid quench techniques. These results along with those previously obtained on other actinide systems, indicates that a large number of the early actinide alloys. especially those bas

β¦ Synopsis
T. It has been fo&n?tbat the admixture of metallic elements of different atomic sizes and strong atomic interactions, which lowers the melting temperature and raises the glescl temperature, facilitates the formation of glsases. Results also indicate that disturbing the short-range coordination by mixing liquid alloys which exhibit different ordering stabilizes the glees. X-ray examination reveals that the crystallization kinetics involved 81% different between the formation and the stability of metallic glasses. This leads to a difference in the composition dependence of the glass formation from that, of the stability.
It is concluded that the formation and stability of glassy alloys simply refiects the high reduced glacrs temperclture, and the disturbance of the short-range st)ructural coordination.
