✦ Synopsis

The basic thermodynamic postulates underlying the concept of volatility of refractory materials are reviewed with particular attention to dissociative vaporization reactions. It is shown under which conditions the maximum vaporization flux can be a property of the refractory material.

A critical discussion on the behaviour of commonly used refractory oxides is carried-out on the ground of the thermodynamic and kinetic considerations here presented and of data previously published.
