✦ Synopsis

Theperformanceof panels which cool by.means of thermalinfraredheat transferto the sky is calculatedfrom basicprinciples. The efficiency of a radiativecooling panel isdefined.Computercalculations with the fullheat transferequationsare performedfor horizontalsurfaceswith infrared-transparent covers. Plotsof efficiency versusa dimensionlesstemperature difference areshownto be insensitiveto variationsin air temperature, wind speed, andsky radiance, resultingin plots analogousto standardefficiency curvesfor solar panels. Experimentalmeasurementsshow that, for most applications, white paintis a betterradiatorthan aluminizedpolyvinyl fluoride film.

## Abstract An experiment was performed to simulate an air‐cooling panel system for passive decay heat removal from a high‐temperature gas‐cooled reactor to investigate the performance of decay heat removal and the temperature distributions of components of the system. The experimental apparatus co
