โœฆ Synopsis

This paper presents the performance data obtained during the reliability and performance tests and during the first year warranty period with 10 X 5.2 MIGD multistage flash (MSF) distillation plants which were installed under Contract C5 of the Al Jobail Phase II Project at Al Jobail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Particular attention is given to the level of performance ratio and minimum fouling which has been achieved and maintained over an extended period of time with the use of the on-line, sponge-ball cleaning system. The performance and cost benefit of operation at high temperature is also discussed.

I NTRODUCTI ON

In September of 1979, the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) of Saudi Arabia contracted with the Joint Venture team of Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Hitachi Zosen Corporation to construct ten multistage flash (MSF) desalination units at its large power/desalination complex at Al Jobail. This contract, C5, is one of nine contracts, Cl through C9, which were awarded by the SWCC to build the Phase II plant which includes ten steam turbinegenerator units with a total capacity of 1,295 MW and a total of 40 MSF desalination units. Each of the desalination units was designed to produce a rated capacity of 5.2 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of distilled water when operating with a polyphosphate scale control additive at low temperature operation (LTO) conditions with a maximum brine temperature of 90.6 C. The units of Contract C5 are also capable of producing a minimum of 6.14 MIGD when using a polymeric scale control additive at high temperature operation (HTO) conditions with a maximum brine temperature of 112.8 C. A comprehensive description of the Al Jobail II Plant was presented by H. E.
