β¦ Synopsis
AbstractmThe thermal oxidation of polyacrylonitrile at temperatures between 200 Β° and 375 Β° has been studied. Samples produced by the heating of polyacrylonitrile fibre at various temperatures within this range, for periods of up to 5 hr, were analysed for carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. A continuous and simultaneous exchange of one oxygen atom for two hydrogen atoms was noted. Two distinct types of infra-red reflectance spectra, associated with different oxidation levels, are related to structural changes. Experimental thermodynamic evidence supports a structure comprising a cyclized polyaerylonitrile chain with epoxide oxygen bonding to the apex carbons of the polycyclic arrangement.

AbstraetmThe thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile has been studied using the techniques of thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and thermal volatilization analysis. The influence of experimental conditions on the results is examined. The very sharp exothermic reaction below 300 Β° is a
