โœฆ Synopsis

In a recent issue of Appl. Sci. Res., Schenk and Schenkels reported their photographic measurements of free convection heat transfer to ice-coated spheres. Apparently concurrent with the work of the above authors El~, we have conducted quite similar experiments with ice spheres immersed in water [2]. We have used solid ice spheres with nominal diameters of 4.5 cm, 7.5 cm, and l0 cm; our ambient water temperature ranged from 1 ยฐC to 22ยฐC. Overall Nusselt numbers were measured by a weight-change technique. This technique is probably less susceptible to error from trapped air bubbles in tile ice, but it does not allow local heat transfer measurements to be made. Our results are in very close agreement with Fig. 8 of [l~. We have been able to correlate our data with tile theoretical heat transfer to a melting, vertical flat plate of ice E3~, and for a 3.2 cm sphere our correlation predicts 8.6 for

HEAT TRANSFER TO ICE IN WATER

Beyond this point, the mathematical model diverges from the physical system and any agreement between calculated velocity fields or temperature for minimum Nu with experiment is probably fortuitous.
