Thermal expansion of RCo 5 compounds (R = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho) is investigated by X-ray diffractometry on single crystalline samples in the temperature range 5-1300 K. All compounds undergo large spontaneous magnetostrictive deformations, the volume effect re~tches 3.2 x 10 -2 at 5 K in HoCo5

Thermal expansion and magnetisation measurements have been performed on a single crystal of HoA12 between 4 and 300 K. A sharp spontaneous volume anomaly has been observed at the spin re-orientation temperature where the easy direction of magnetisation changes from [101] to [010]. A model incorporat
