β¦ Synopsis
Two techniques have been developed to measure the thermal diffusivity of powders pressed into the form of cylinders. Both techniques use a modified commercial differential thermal analysis apparatus to monitor the temperature gradient inside the cylinder when the ambient temperature is increased either linearly with time or suddenly from one constant value to another. The theory is elaborated and graphs are presented which allow the thermal diffusivity to be obtained for a variety of cylinder geometries. Both techniques have been used to measure the thermal diffusivity of pyrotechnic mixtures of tungsten and potassium dichromate.
