✦ Synopsis

The pyrolysis of polyarylates, prepared from terephthaloyl chloriae and bisphenol A [2,2-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane] CI~) and from terephthaloyl chloride and phenolphthalein (TPP), at 392 ° in vacuum has been examined. The degradation of polymer TD is compared in detail with the behaviour of the model compound phenyl benzoate. The principal features of the degradation are explained by breakdown of the ester group which is shown to involve a complex series of reactions including rearrangement and radical processes.
