✦ Synopsis
High-temperature microscopy, high-temperature X-ray diffraction, DTA and TGA indicated that synthetic Ca2SiO4.CaCl 2 decomposes according to the reaction 108404 Ca2SiO4.CaCl2(s) ='-Ca2SiO4(s) + CaCI2(1) The direct development of ~'-Ca2SiO 4 from structural relics of decomposed Ca2SiO4.CaCI2 is proposed.

The conditions leading to spurrite formation in the kiln have been simulated by laboratory studies, using reagent-grade reactants. Fluorine, and to a lesser extent chlorine, (F , CI ) are effective mineralizers, but direct synthesis of spurrite without mineralizers is only achieved if Ca3SiO 5 is us

Single crystals of y-Ca2SiO 4 were synthesized by the flux method, and the crystals large enough for X-ray single crystal study was obtained using CaCI 2 as the flux. 581 independent diffraction intensities were collected by an automatic single crystal diffractometer. The structure was refined with
