The mechanical failure of PZT ceramics was characterized by measuring R-curves for compositions near and at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) where tetragonal and rhombohedral phases coexist in equal quantities. The R-curve behaviours (an increasing fracture toughness with crack extension) were
