✦ Synopsis

structure of Kupffer cells after liver transplantation and adhesion molecule expression in human liver.

The section on infection comprises a potpourri of papers dealing with subjects such as human immunodeficiency virus-1 replication in endothelial cells, viral activation of Kupffer cells and the role of bacteria in Kupffer cell activation.

Alcohol in acute and chronic administration and its effects on several types of sinusoidal cell at the ultrastructural level and in the release of cytokines and chemotaxis are discussed in the 10 papers in the alcohol section.

The last section deals with endocytosis, in particular with lipoprotein uptake, scavenger receptors, carbohydrate receptors and the handling of endotoxin and IgA immune complexes.

One criticism, which was made by the editors themselves, waswith the exception of one sectionthe absence of state-of-the-art reviews for each major topic. These would be most useful to pull together the wide variety of studies presented in each section. In summary, this book represents the efforts of the most active workers in hepatic sinusoidal cell research. As such, it will probably appeal most to the reader already interested in the field, for whom it is a most useful resource; its basic-science orientation may not attract many clinicians.
