✦ Synopsis

We present a theoretical treatment of stimulated coherent Raman scattering with laser pulses whose duration is shorter than the period of the relevant molecular vibrational mode. We treat two cases of current experimental interest: (i) the laser is detuned from an electronic transition; (ii) the laser is resonant with an electronic transition. In case (ii), the signal is shown to be sensttive to dynamics of vibrations in an electronic excited state.
