The theory of the atomic beam optical double resonance spectroscopy first introduced by 1. 1. Rabi is developed. An expression for the transition probability is derived which includes terms that may lead to line shifts and distortions. The approximations made in obtaining this result are given, and means for attaining a more precise line-shape formula are indicated.
