✦ Synopsis
Theory for the thermocouple psychrometer relating the output electromotive force to temperature, pressure, psychrometer geometry, as well as to the water potential in the sample is developed from laws of heat and vapor transport between the sample and the wet junction of the psychrometer. Good agreement is found between the psychrometer output predicted by this theory and that found experimentally. The analysis suggests design changes that should improve performance of the thermocouple psychrometer. Some properties of the sample that affect the accuracy of water potential estimation with the thermocouple psychrometer are also discussed.
