Abstract
The effects of higher order dispersion are analyzed for the first time in ultra‐fast signal demultiplexing using a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The results show that performance degradation of NOLM can occur when higher order dispersion is not negligible. Therefore, a loop fiber with a higher order dispersion that is as small as possible should be chosen to realize terabit/second operation of the NOLM. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
