Wiskunde is de taal van de getallen
Wiskunde stijgt boven het niveau van rekenen uit. Zo werken we bij wiskunde niet alleen met getallen, maar ook met letters zodat we formules (en vergelijkingen) kunnen maken. Met deze formules kunnen we verbanden makkelijker verwoorden.
Een voorbeeld: Je gaat op vakantie waar je auto wilt huren. Je betaalt bij een bedrijf een standaard bedrag van 50 euro en daarnaast 30 cent per kilometer waarbij je niets betaald voor de eerste 25 kilometer. Een lange, talige zin, die je misschien wel twee keer moet lezen voordat je hem snapt. In de wiskunde zouden we dat uitdrukken als bedrag in euro's = 50 + 0,3 ร (aantal km โ 25). Een heel stuk begrijpelijker! Wiskunde stelt ons in staat te communiceren zonder overbodig menselijk taalgebruik. Gewoon optellen, vermenigvuldigen, is-gelijk-aan, enzovoort. Een taal die overal op de wereld begrepen wordt. De wiskundige tekens zijn hetzelfde of je nou Engels, Frans, Spaans of Nederlands spreekt
