✦ Synopsis

The reaction was performed in a continuously operated unit with a Berty reactor and on-line GC analysis of the products. Ideal backmixing was realized at rotor speeds of 2500 min ±1 . Typical reaction conditions were temperatures between 300 and 400 C, total pressures around 10 bar, acetone weight hourly space velocities (WHSV) between 0.5 and 9.0 kg/(kg h), and a molar feed ratio H 2 /acetone of 0.5.

A particular feature of carbon catalysts loaded with noble metals refers to their high long term stability as depicted in the figure. The data shown was obtained with a Pt/C-catalyst containing 0.5 mass-% platinum (at 350 C, 10.7 bar, WHSV = 0.5 h ±1 , H 2 /acetone = 0.5). To our knowledge, there is no other catalyst used for this kind of reaction showing a lifetime of this magnitude. The yield of MIBK still stays below the best values reported in the open literature. It has to be kept in mind, though, that our measurements were conducted in a backmixed reactor for research purposes. Since the reaction orders of the rate determining consecutive steps are of first order at least, it is expected that considerably higher yields will be obtained in a PFR system. This will be demonstrated in the near future.
