โฆ Synopsis
A theoretical model is set up to calculate the birefringence of nonlinear optical crystals with the use of the ab initio molecular orbital method. The birefringence of a NaNO2 crystal is calculated as an example. The theoretical value is 0.2 8, which agrees well with the experimental result. This model is useful to understand the origin of birefringence of nonlinear optical crystals and will be a powerful tool for the "molecular engineering" of nonlinear optical materials.
