✦ Synopsis
This paper is concerned with a systematic approach for evaluating the optimal placement of an optical amplifier on a fiber link using a direct detection digital transmission system. The optimum position corresponds to maximizing the signalto-noise ratio at the receiver. The presented theory confirms and quantifies the intuitively expected impact of the noise and gain saturation characteristics of the amplifiers on the overall system performance. A detailed experimental investigation carried on various erbium-doped fiber amplifiers at 2.5 Gbit/s agrees with the proposed model.
