Abstract

Chatwin and Sullivan (1990a) proposed a simple model (in terms of two parameters α and β) for the moments of scalar fluctuations in self‐similar turbulent shear flows. They showed the model results to be well satisfied by observations from a range of experiments. Here their theory and some developments from it are summarized. The latter include results on the relationships between higher moments, in particular the skewness and kurtosis, and models for the evolution of α and β.
