โœฆ Synopsis


The yield of fast neutrons from plutonium discs is measured with a high-pressure methane counter for incident neutron energies up to 60 eV, using the Harwell time-of-flight neutron spectrometer. By measuring the transmission of the samples under identical conditions, and correcting for scattering, the number of incident neutrons captured in the sample is obtained. The ratio 7 of the fast-neutron yield to the number of incident neutrons captured is then calculated as a function of incident energy, the calibration constant being obtained by fitting to known values in the region 0*03-0.3 eV.
