✦ Synopsis
An empirical imperative confronts psychotherapeutic practice which asserts that it must be informed and guided by empirical or scientific information. The American Psychological Association has interpreted this imperative to mean that therapists should practice empirically validated treatments -manualized treatments that have been shown, in randomized clinical trials, to be statistically more effective than no treatment or treatment as usual. As this volume testifies, family psychology has responded to this imperative with a growing number of empirically validated treatments.
