โœฆ Synopsis

This chapter reviews the ways in which child temperament impacts aspects of social development in the periods from preschool to late elementary school. We start by providing some theoretical background on temperament and how it infl uences social development. After noting some methodological issues, we review research on the connections between temperament and social relations, social competence, and problematic social behaviors. Where evidence is available, we discuss the roles of gender differences, social class, and cultural factors. We then review temperament -focused intervention programs, which are designed to promote positive social development. In the concluding section, we link current evidence with various theoretical propositions regarding temperament and social development and highlight some areas where future research is likely to be particularly illuminating.
