✦ Synopsis

The night after a shooting star is seen streaking through the sky from Mars, a cylinder is discovered on Horsell Common in London. At first, native locals approach the cylinder armed just with a white flagβ€”only to be quickly killed by an all-destroying heat-ray. Very soon humankind finds itself on the brink of extinction. One of the most terrifying and morally prescient science fiction novels ever penned, H. G. Wells raises questions of mortality, man’s place in nature, and the evil lurking in the technological future questions that remain urgently relevant in the twenty-first century.
