August 1914. At last, the great war that everyone felt was coming has really begun. The young couple Fritz and Mila, along with so many others, are drawn into the frenzy of enthusiasm for war and hostility. But uncontrollable feelings also seem to arise between the two: Fritz hopes that the war will provide a kind of purification of forbidden feelings that he cannot even trust Mila, and volunteers to report to the front. And Mila suddenly feels violent hostility because her father was French and France is now a "hereditary enemy". When a teacher known as a French hater dies, Mila is arrested.
