✦ Synopsis

It is winter, 1139 AD, and the civil war raging between the followers of King Stephen and those of the Empress Maud sweeps over the city of Worcester. Many refugees are fleeing northward towards Ludlow and Shrewsbury. Two of them, a young orphaned brother and sister of a great family, along with the nun who accompanied them, seem to have disappeared in the wild winter landscape. Brother Cadfael of the Benedictine Monastery sets out to find them.
