The triplet state Raman spectra of C6O and C7o in toluene were obtained using the pump/probe technique. For C6o, new bands at 1461 and 1475 cm-1 appeared around 1470 cm-1 in the triplet state. The Raman peaks at 1448 and 1368 cm-1 for C7o shifted to lower frequencies due to the increase in antibondi

โฆ Synopsis
A technique to produce samples consisting primarily of Cw and C,,, by fractional sublimation of carbon soot was found and used to produce solid films of these molecules. Film compositions were determined using a surface analytical mass spectrometric technique. Vibrational Raman spectra of the purified films were measured and vibrational lines of both Cw and CT0 are identified. A CeO line at 273 cm-' is observed, in agreement with theoretical predictions for the lowest frequency H, "squashing" mode of Buckminsterfullerene. The two strongest Cm lines, found at 1469 and 497 cm-', can consistently be assigned to the two totally symmetric & modes on the basis of their frequencies and measured depolarization ratios.

We report vibrational Raman and infrared spectra for chemically separated CbO and C7e fullerenes. Thin film samples were prepared by subliming the chromatographically separated species onto appropriate substrates. The Cso Raman spectrum shows eight clear lines and two weaker ones. The electronic and vibrational structures of C,, and C,,, have been calculated at the PM3 semiempirical level. C, has a partially delocalized structure, while C,, has both a localized set and a delocalized set of MOs. As with AM1 and MNDO, PM3 predicts the heat of formation of C,, to be greater than
Analysis of the Raman spectra of three brominated ftierenes, obtained at 1 cm-' resolution, provides supporting evidence for the structural models derived from X-my single crystal studies. The measured Raman frequencies can be mtiottaliied on tbe basis of symmetry considerations.
Resonant electron capture by C 60 and C 70 was studied and it was established that long-lived (i.e. mass spectrometrically observable) parent negative ions are formed within an extremely broad energy region (0-14 eV). It has been shown that effective yield curves of C 60 -and C 70 -in the thermal en
